The League of Lawyers European Conference in Berlin, Germany on 15th April 2016

The League of Lawyers hosted a conference titled “Real-Estate Hot Spots in Asia and Europe” on the 15th April 2016. It was held at the premise of our member, VON ZANTHIER & SCHULZ in Berlin, Germany. The seminar commenced with a welcome note by Henning von Zanthier, the President of the League of Lawyers.

Niten Chauhan and Steven Porter from JPC Law, London, UK spoke extensively on “UK Property Investment and the Associated Risks”. While the law in UK doesn’t discriminate against foreigner individuals or foreign-controlled companies, it should be noted that as of April 2015, foreign investors have to pay tax on gains in value on UK residential properties they own.

For the second presentation, “Introduction to the Real-Estate Market in Berlin” it was presented by Henning von Zanthier and Rüdiger Schulz from VON ZANTHIER & SCHULZ, Franz-Martin Wolff (Notary), Sebastian Luding (real estate expert, DR. BRÜGGEMANN GmbH), and Daniel Koschyk (real estate expert, Hypoverinsbank). The aim was to introduce the German Real Estate Law to the participants, especially those from overseas.

After a networking session, it was followed by a presentation by Manoj Chhabra from Astra Law, New Delhi, India. It was titled “FDI in Indian Real Estate Sector”. Considerable liberalisation has happened in the last 2 years as India’s real estate used to be one of the most heavily regulated sectors.

The final presentation of the day was by Andrew Sutedja from Sutedja & Associates, Jakarta, Indonesia on “Property (Office & Residence) Ownership by Foreign Citizens in Indonesia”. The Indonesian government recently issued Regulation No.103 of 2015 on the Ownership of Residential Property by Foreign Citizens Domiciled in Indonesia. The conference ended with a networking session in Käfer Restaurant on the rooftop of the German Parliment, one of the most prestigious venues in Berlin.
